December Sephora Play Review

January 12, 2017

December's Sephora Play theme was, "The partygoers." I found this funny because the first half of my December was studying for finals, working on group projects, scouring the library for textbooks, working, and taking finals. Although that all seems so far away as I've been on winter break, enjoying every peaceful lazy moment and Real Housewives rerun.

Winter break has given me ample time to review last month's box- let's dive in!
This bag was all about "night out necessities." Although I don't carry a makeup bag in my purse Sephora Play is supplying me with night out supplies, and a pouch! Don't be surprised if I end up doing a, "What's in my makeup bag post" later in 2017.
Similar to many dry shampoos this dry shampoo absorbs oil and adds some volume. Upon first spray this dry shampoo sprays very noticeably and you have to rub it in profusely. Its so stark compared to my black hair. There is a distinguishable smell in this product but it fades away. However, I did feel like this dry shampoo did help take out some of the oiliness in my hair. I noticed that this dry shampoo left residue in my hairbrush and made it have a white consistency in the bristles. I had to shampoo my hairbrush to get the residue out. Vibe killer =(
I tried this setting spray on several occasions. Mainly using it when I had long shifts at the Bucks. I did think it set my makeup well and my makeup looked better after rough 8 hour shifts. The spray applies evenly and its not damp at all. I don't like the smell of this setting spray. Personally I felt like this spray did the same work as my KVD setting powder.
Comparively this red is close to a lot of MAC lipsticks and KVD's Studded Kiss Lipsticks. MAC's Kinky and Opera are both lighter and brighter. Kat Von D's Tijuana Studded Kiss Lipstick is warmer and $7 more, Underage Red is $6 more and brighter. I did think this was a cute sample and a good size lip stain for your purse or backpack. As a woman of color I really appreciated a red instead of a nude or pink this past month.
This mascara retails for $30 at full size, hello! I was instantly wowed with this mascara. I think the applicator is all around perfect. It perfectly applies mascara to each eyelash.

Step 1 Skin Equalizer Smoothing Primer
I actually own a full size of this product but I've never used it before so this sample helped break the ice. This primer is nice and really mattifies your makeup. I don't like how thick this product seemed upon squeezing it out, but that's my only complaint.
This scent is a blend of vanilla bourbon and spice wood with floral notes. Its a warm and spicy perfume which is my favorite category. This was an interesting scent. You can really smell the bourbon but there is a lot of sweetness and spice to the scent. I wouldn't repurchase it but I did think it was a interesting sample.
Overall this was a fun bag. I enjoyed trying samples of Drybar, UD, Bobbi Brown, and Elizabeth + James. The Sephora lipstick will be one that makes it into my clutch and backpack for some time to come.

I am headed back to school Monday to finish my senior year of college. I am excited, anxious, and panicked all at once. However I am taking a flower arranging class, hitting life back, and am going to try to do yoga even more this semester. Happy almost Year of the Rooster! See you soon!

  8. Good luck with the start of your semester Sonia! A flower arranging class sounds like so much fun. This looks like it was a fun bag--the setting spray is something I could really use, and the lip stain is such a pretty color!

    1. Thanks Mme. You should try a sample of this product. I have normal skin so setting spray doesnt really ever do anything for me, but I like it!

  9. Thanks for sharing your honest thoughts with us, girl! Finding a dry shampoo that checks all the boxes is no easy task, I've yet to find one myself. I'm sorry the one included in the box wasn't the best, but that setting spray sounds great, everyone really seems to swear by it. Thanks again for sharing, beauty, and I hope you have the most amazing week ahead!

  11. I love reading your sephora play reviews! I have been thinking about checking out that dry shampoo, so it's good to know it isn't a great option for those of us with darker hair. Good luck with this semester! Can't wait to see the gorgeous arrangements you make in your floral class ♡

    1. Thanks Jessica always so sweet. I always thought the colored dry shampoos were silly but now I understand they are so practically. I just don't think I'm a dry shampoo girl overall although I need something to cut the oil on 3rd day hair. Likewise, hope you have a great semester!

  15. This sounds like a great bag! I've never tried a dry shampoo before and this got me curious.

I like how the products in this one are practical and can be considered as beauty necessities.
