In the spring I decided that I was going to participate in the 20 in 2020 dressing challenge. Essentially the challenge (Created by @Dressing_dawn) involved limiting my purchases this year to no more than 20 wardrobe/fashion pieces. The main idea behind the challenge is to build accountability around the idea of owning less. So here's what I ended up buying and what I learned.

October ended with a full moon and my heart was ready for a new month of possibilities. I've never been much of a fan of November. Oddly enough, it did not disappoint this year.

Today's post is brought to you by Chanel No. 1, outfit repeater and proud! I've had this turtleneck for 5 years and it has become somewhat of a signature Chanel look? It's something I wear over and over again and still love. While it's been featured on the blog before I really love these pictures we took at Schaake's Pumpkin Patch! If you've never been to this pumpkin patch before its a sight for sore eyes.

It amazes me how I've lived in the Sunflower State for so long yet I've never been out to Grinter Farms. I decided to check it out a couple weekends ago and trust me when I say that the views did not disappoint. This sunflower field was one of the most beautiful things I have EVER seen. Even if you've visited the farm before seeing all these sunflowers will bring a smile to your face. If that doesn't do it there's also a great ice cream shop not far from the field!

Hello, world! I can't remember the last time I posted so many style posts?! I promise I'm still using beauty and skincare products over here. Honestly, I feel like I've never used so many skincare products in my life than recently. My empties box I sent to Terracycle was over 10 lbs! Nevertheless, today I'm reviewing the Hydrating Milky collection that Pixi Beauty released a hot minute ago.

A few years ago I found what might be my favorite dress. You might remember it from this post. The dress also came in white and yellow. I managed to snag it in white, but was unable to find the yellow in my size until recently. I was scouring my eBay saved searches and this dress showed up in my size for $35 (this dress originally retailed for $138).

An interesting fact about me is that surprisingly my favorite designer is not Chanel (a close second). It's actually Anna Sui! I've loved Anna's work for a very long time. She's created so many archetypes in her designs ranging from punk to Americana that make her work so multifaceted and interesting. I think that's why I love her work so much. You can dress mod or punk depending on the day when wearing Anna Sui! Also, she's collaborated with so many great brands like Hello Kitty, Barbie (She has her own collector Barbie doll which I still want tbh), Free People, Target, etc. I got this book for my birthday and its probably one of my favorite because it really delves into Anna's designs and archetypes.

When I was a kid I lived in sneakers. I was always running around in one pair or another. As an adult I rarely wear them?! Recently, I found myself on the prowl for a new pair of sneakers for days when I need comfier yet stylish footwear.

Hello, friends! I'm astonished that the world has changed so much in just a few months. Life looks so different than it did when I took these pictures. Lately I've felt overwhelmed with emotions because of coronavirus. Still, the blog has been a grounding place for me to ease my mind. Today I wanted to share a round up of my best eBay finds. As I've shared in many posts eBay is one of my most favorite places to shop. Check out this post if you haven't already. It spills a few of my tips and tricks for using eBay.

At the beginning of the year my pal Jess from Stylebook shared a post about a dressing challenge that really caught my eye. The 20 in 2020 dressing challenge. Created by @Dressing_dawn the idea was to build accountability around the idea of owning less and challenging ourselves to limit our purchases to no more than 20 wardrobe/clothing pieces in 2020.

It seems like so much time has passed since these pictures were taken in mid-March. The world has changed so much in such a short period of time. I haven't been inspired to blog as much lately, but a friend of mine encouraged me to share my words. Plus, this dress just brings me so much joy so here I am. Many of you know I'm obsessed with swans. I'm not sure where my pension for this beautiful bird came from but anything swan related I adore. Swan mugs, swan planters, this swan mirror from Anthro I want, and of course Swans IRL.

Nowhere to be but home

These past couple weeks have been tumultuous, to say at the least. I hope wherever you are friends that you are staying well during this crazy time. I wanted to share a few things that are keeping me sane during this chaos.
I haven't written a makeup review since October. Who am I?! To be fair between finishing my last semester of grad school and working full-time didn't leave much time for beauty reviews. Not to say my beauty routine wasn't on par, I just wasn't able to invest the time I normally put into beauty reviews since then. Now that grad school is over I'm back at it and wanted to chat about some beauty faves. Plus, I just need a reprieve from all this COVID-19 panic/talk. So here's my quick distraction  from the chaos!
Pixi Endless Silky Eye Pen*
I always love a good eyeliner and this is a pretty budget friendly eye pencil ($12). It lives up to its claim of being silky and creamy. This eyeliner has about 12 hour wear without smudging but is pretty impressive for the price!

I've never been a huge lip gloss girl but tbh the packaging of this lip gloss was so hard to pass up and it was a great price at TJ Maxx. I really like this gloss because its actually pigmented and the color is super wearable/unique. I don't have a lot of orange lipsticks or glosses so this is great. Plus this lip gloss is hydrating (It has essence of peach, coconut oil, and vitamin E). I also like that this gloss isn't sticky at all. I can also eat/drink without it appearing fuzzy.
This cult classic toner is great and omg it says my name on it?! I love this toner. Its great to use after cleansing your face and helps clean pores and get rid of oil/makeup. I have been trying to use toner more these days and I reach for this one most often.

I'll be honest I've never really used mist in my beauty routine before. I have been on the hunt for a new foundation and it seems like my skin has been changing lately. All my co-workers tell me this isn't something that happens in your twenties but I've tried 7 foundations and by the end of an 8 ish hour day they don't look great (another story for another day) but my friend Abbey suggested that I add mist into my morning routine. Luckily Pixi Beauty sent me this Glow Mist with Propolis & Argan Oil to try and I'm really enjoying it. The mist has 13 natural oils including rose flower oil, lavender oil, Propolis (an extract that has antioxidant properties), Aloe Vera, and Fruit extracts. It helps hydrate, prep, and prime my skin for the day. I have noticed a difference in my makeup application when using this stuff. Although I will say it was challenging to figure out when to apply this mist into my routine because I always do my eye makeup first! I've started using this after toner and before I put on serums. While this product says its suitable for all skin types I would say its probably best suited for normal/dry skin. It has a slightly oily feeling if you apply it with makeup on so I would suggest incorporating it into your skin routine rather than as an additional step to your makeup application.

Pixi Rose Ceramide Cream*
I love Pixi Beauty's creams! At $24 this cream is a higher-end drug store lotion. The formula is different from other  PB moisturizers I've tried. I can feel a difference in the formula and the application. It has antioxidant rose flower oil, ceramide which provides time-release moisture, and probiotics. While I'm not sure I'd repurchase this cream it's definitely a nice alternative when I want a lighter night cream or heavier cream in the morning.

I had been eyeing this palette for so long and bought it right after Father Christmas gave me a Sephora gift card. It's so beautiful and has such a versatile range of shadows. Foils, shimmers, mattes, and super-glitters I've bought 5 Kat Von D palettes and this one is my truthfully my favorite. My favorite color is Sonrisa. Its an apricot with turquoise shimmer and so lovely. I also love the burgundies they're so pretty.

I saw this palette at Ulta awhile ago but was hesitant about the green shadow and the glittering shadow since I had never tried any from Too Faced. Fortunately my Erika Jayne Pretty Mess palette has quite a few multi-sparkle/glittering shades that solidified my decision to get this palette! This palette is definitely different from what I normally would buy, but at the same time its because it has more shimmers than mattes but I like that about it! I also like that this palette has really pretty neutrals. I love the first three shades a lot. I also love that Too Faced makes their palettes scented. This palette smells like pineapples and I got it for $15 dollars at Marshalls which is amazing considering it still retails for $35 at Ulta?! So keep your eyes out! I've also seen the Razzle Dazzle Berry palette as well.

This palette is just so therapeutic for me! Its so pretty and surprisingly very versatile/wearable! I like that you can create super neutral or super glam/bold looks. I find myself somewhere in the middle most days, but these colors are all office appropriate if you ask me.

All in all these are a few products I'm loving right now. I'd also recommend Clinique Fresh Pressed Pure Vitamin C 7 Day System. Its a 7 day system that includes a vitamin c serum and 7 face washes. I noticed that my skin was noticeably more bright and dulled some acne scars/an inflamed blemish within a few days. Dulling the inflamed blemish was huge for me! I love this stuff. I'd definitely take it while travelling because my skin always gets weird when I'm not in KC.

It feels so nice to be blogging again but I also feel like sharing my beauty favorites while there is so much going on right now is ill-suited. It's hard not to feel that way when any large event happens in the world though. COVID-19 has had a much larger impact on my life than I initially thought it would. A lot of projects I have been working on at work have been canceled or put on indefinite hold which sucks. At the same time I have shifted my perspective to try to social distance myself from others for the next couple of weeks. Like many individuals I will be working from home, reading, and resting (as usual). I've also found myself tidying lately. I organized the stuff under my sink which was a nightmare and deep cleaned my beauty carousel which I need to do every few months. Amidst so many things changing right now I'm trying to keep an open heart and stay grateful for everything.

What do you guys think of these beauty products? Are you doing any social distancing right now?

I started JMC as a fashion blog  eight years ago, but for the past few years I have been buying less and less clothes. I've shopped mainly secondhand and I have invested more into pieces I love to wear again and again. I'm Lizzie McGuire, outfit repeater and proud. Clothing is such an important part of our self expression. Rachel Zoe said, "Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak". While clothing brings us so much joy (and trust me I know the joy) it also causes environmental devastation and social inequality. This is a crisis, folks. Clothing is the fastest growing category of waste in US landfills.

It seems like I have been on the hunt for a DryBar hairdryer at Marshalls/TJX for an eternity. At one point I had spotted some on IG and my best friend Victoria and I literally scoured each store in our area with no luck. Since I am a Marshalls/TJX fiend I follow a girl in KC who posts what she finds at the nearby stores which helps me see the new loot and pinpoint what I want. One Saturday she posted this set at a nearby shop and I dropped everything and drove to TJ! I got this set for $129 which is a steal because the hairdryer itself retails for $195. Nordstrom Rack is actually selling this set for $120 rn which is a STEAL and recently I've seen this set on clearance at Marshalls/TJ.

I'm not a big fan of the traditional blazer. However, I do love a colorful blazer that brightens up your outfit and mood. There's something about wearing pink that makes me so happy.

The Pink Blazer

January 19, 2020

I'm not a big fan of the traditional blazer. However, I do love a colorful blazer that brightens up your outfit and mood. There's something about wearing pink that makes me so happy.
Back in June I had this brainwave that for my Master's ceremony I wanted to wear a pink silk suit. Not sure how I went from 0 to pink suit. Maybe all of those episodes of Dynasty my friend Liz has suffocated me with? So I started looking around for suits, and of course my girl Rachel Zoe was ahead of the trend 2 years ago in her 2017 resort collection with a killer pink suit. I managed to find these silk pants for $25 (originally retailing $295) and bought the blazer from a girl on IG for an amount larger than I originally intended, but still quite a bit cheaper than retail.

Last May my friend Macy started her own styling business called Style À La Mode! Equal parts fashion and digital styling. Style À La Mode consists of Macy and her mom Lori. They have a wide range of services that appeal to women in every phase of life such as bridal styling, personal shopping, event/photo shoot styling, and a closet audit. Macy and I go way back to our undergrad days. Interestingly enough we were almost roommates!
While I have found some sort of closet nirvana I have been wanting to work with Macy to do a closet audit. It's always helpful to have a fresh set of eyes look through your closet and find the missed opportunities and gaps. Plus there are always a few pieces I buy on eBay that I am a little hesitant about and could use a second opinion on.
My closet itself is pretty tidy. You might remember this post from 2016 when I first organized my closet using the KonMari method. This method literally changed how I perceive the things I own and how I tidy my closet. My strategy to tidying my closet is pretty simple. I only purchase things I can see myself re-wearing  and enjoy re-wearing(if not I sell them). Additionally, I like to have the things that bring me joy visible. A Sailor Moon backpack I bought at a toy store in New York when I was 11, my vintage Bergdorf Goodman wicker bag, my favorite candle (Twisted Peppermint from Bath & Body Works). I keep my jeans, shorts, and trousers close because I'm always reaching for them. I keep my handbags or my children stuffed in their dustbags in boxes. Boring I know, but that's the best way to care for them.
I keep my dresses/jumpsuits on the top rack of my closet organized by sleeve length and color. The bottom rack is organized in a similar fashion but consists of tank tops, t-shirts, blouses, jackets, skirts, pants, etc. I'm not sure who told me to organize by sleeve length? Maybe Rachel Zoe? Nevertheless, it makes it easier to sift through my closet when I'm not using my Stylebook app.
While I didn't need much help organizing my closet there are times when it'd be great to have another set of eyes to uncover the hidden gems in my closet and find new pairings. Cue Style À La Mode's assistance! For instance, I have been on the fence about this Cupcakes & Cashmere Mercury shift dress for a minute but Macy helped me work through this look.
We paired this dress with these totally under worn Betsey Johnson heels.
Topped off with my boy bag!
Macy also challenged me to restyle my favorite  DVF x Neiman Marcus wrap dress. I pulled out an old pair of SJP Collection heels and a Balmain x H&M clutch. Funny how easy it is to put together a new outfit when you have a stylist around!
Before I put together my pink suit I had no idea what kind of shapewear to buy for these unlined pants. Surprisingly YouTube wasn't helpful at all?! I sent Macy an IG message and she was so helpful and responsive in regards to what kind of shapewear I needed to make this piece work.
What I enjoyed most about my closet audit with Macy is that she created a few flat lays for me with my clothes. This was super helpful because I can just log them in my Stylebook app and keep them for times when I want something new to wear for work or life.

I love this pairing! This Molly Ringwald shirt is one of my favorites and this is a super fresh take on it.
I showed Macy some of my Pinterest boards to see what styles I'm currently loving and how we can reuse what's in my closet to get there. To be honest I am trying to buy less in 2020 so I want to get the most out of my wardrobe.
My style is a bit unusual and my closet is my space to ultimately be me and spark joy. While my closet is no where close to MC's in cribs #closetgoals it's great for where I'm at in life right now.
I forgot how fun it was to have a fashion show in your closet. I definitely felt like Carrie Bradshaw cleaning out her closet /having a fashion show in the SATC movie. It's always fun to have someone over and show them your closet/what makes you feel most confident. If you live in the KC metro contact Macy! You can book a consultation to discuss your style goals and closet needs. She also does digital styling and personal shopping. I've also talked her ear off about Stylebook so maybe digitizing your closet is in the cards too?! Oh and  might I add that she also works in digital marketing and can assist with both social media strategy and photo styling!

Well friends there's my first post for the year and now to pig out during KCRW. Tbh all I want is a piece of key lime pie.

JMC x Style À La Mode

January 9, 2020
