She's So Unusual

September 1, 2017

I've been thinking a lot about the topic of personal style lately and whether its really possible to define your style in one word. When I think of my style icons (best illustrated on my Pinterest board) I think of so many different women, but there's not necessarily anything they share in common. So I started asking my close friends and my parents about how they'd define my style and I got answers like bold, chic, creative, edgy, artsy, eclectic, timeless, and unusual.
One of my best friends mentioned the word, "unusual." It got me thinking that maybe one word to define my style could be a word as simple as unusual. Defined as, "Remarkable or interesting because different from or better than others." Although I'd like to define my style into a more common style term, unusual was the word that I felt fit my style the most.
My style has really grown in the past couple years and I'm really grateful I've made peace with myself and my closet. Although I don't shop nearly as much as I used to in high school and the process is a lot different, I'm happier. I look in my closet and I'm excited to wear something I've worn ten times. The pieces in my closet make me feel happy, professional, and ready to tackle life's adventures. Still I feel a little at a loss that I can't exactly place a finger on one word to describe my own style, but I digress. Isn't life about the journey, not the destination? Shouldn't style be the same way? If it is haven't I been on a long journey then? I've finally found a place to rest, and enjoy this place somewhere at equilibrium.
This top was actually a graduation gift. I had been on a search for it in my size since I didn't get a chance to snap it up while working at Anthro, but then one day searching eBay I found it! Most likely fate at a whopping $24 when this top retailed for $98.  I love the retro vibe of this top and the neckerchief is made from silk! It's such a unique piece but it can be worn for so many occasions. I've worn it to a Royals game and out at MGM harbor in Maryland.

So I'm leaving my style at unusual for now, until I find a word that can better describe my style. I really do think personal style is a journey rather than a destination, and I think I'd rather that be it for now.

What do you think, whether this is the first time you're visiting my site or if you're following along, how would you describe my style?

  1. I agree that finding your personal style is like a journey or process, we go through several iteration before we're happy with the final result. From this outfit, which I really like, the words that come to mind are eclectic with a little bit of edge! I do think electric and unusual have very similar meanings too!

  3. I love those sunglasses! I think you have a unique style: reminds me of a friend of mine, a bit retro progressive styling. My style has evolved but it's essentially a mix of elegance, with vintage and romantic elements.

  4. Style is a journey which you develop over the time. I love to read and experiment with fashion. The clothes are those you wouldn't expect to look or feel good on you and they just feel so perfect.
    Have a fantastic week.

  11. I find myself buying less clothes now, but I feel happier and more confident with that as well. I think it's because we grow up and the act of buying things stops being so exciting and starts being more conscious. We're spending our money (or just less money) now, so we better be smart about it :) Lovely outfit!

    1. So good to hear Marta. When I do shop its such a rush. I've been listening to Marie Kondo's books and they're so helpful in continuing to buy only pieces that spark joy.

  12. Your unusual style is a perfect style for you! It's a long journey to figure out your style (believe me, I'm still doing it) and it continues to develop since then. Personally, I think figuring it out is so much better than trying to reinvent it every season haha

  18. I love the look, especially the glasses. Also, yup, finding your own style is a process you need to discover on your own. You can get inspirations from others from time to time, and it's completely okay to be different, or even unusual. We're all different, that's what makes this whole thing interesting.

  19. Hearing that your style is unusual is such a compliment, it means that it truly is reflective of you as an individual, which is what style should be! I know you must have really felt amazing after pondering her answer. That said, I love those sunnies on you, so cute! Thanks for sharing and I hope you're having a great week so far, girlie!

  25. Love your accessorising with the scarf! :) I agree too, it's so hard to definite our own personal style. It's interesting getting feedback from others as to how they would describe it as they often have insights we don't. I think style is always evolving and it's interesting to see how my outfits change over the course of blogging - it's so fun to look back! :)

Hope you are having a lovely week so far :)
