September Sephora Play Review

October 7, 2016

Hi friends! Happy October! The Unbasic Basics was the theme behind September's Sephora Play box. My friend Mallory shot some pretty pictures of last month's box in the KSU Gardens. Mallory also has an awesome blog, check it out here!

This month was my 13th box topping off a year! Eyeliner, lipsticks, gel brow, face cream, and a hair perfector (oh my). Although I've received Ole Henriken's Sheer Transformation before in my first Sephora Play box, this was a diverse box.  I loved this cute bag too, it certainly belongs amongst roses!

The only problem I still have with this box and subscription is ultimately the shipping. It seems like if you live in the heart of suburbia or the city these boxes get to your doorstep quickly. However, I always get these boxes the third or the last week of the month which is quite frustrating sigh.
In terms of products I've received over the year I feel like I've gotten my moneys worth. At first I was nervous these samples would be tiny. Instead I feel like my beauty vanity is always covered in new Sephora Play products. I think what I like most about this subscription is that I get so many new products I'd never try. As picky as I am I've never given a Sephora Play product away which I find surprising!

Onto the review!

Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wizz

This brow gel was a first for Sephora Play and I'm hoping more ABH is to come. This gel is lightweight and flexible. To many people's surprises I don't do anything to my brows. I occasionally trim them with nail scissors and I use a bit of e.l.f. studio eyebrow kit in medium, and fill in the front. I was a little curious as to what a lady like me, so unconcerned about her brows was going to do with this stuff, but I tried it and was surprised how much I liked it. I noticed that my brows looked more put together and shaped with this product. I've always wanted to go get my eyebrows done at Anastasia Beverly's counter at Nordstrom maybe this product will be my push?
Atelier Cologne Sud Magnolia

This cologne is floral, floral, floral. It has notes of cedar-wood, sandalwood, musk, magnolia, Bulgarian rose, bitter orange, black currant, and saffron. I'm a little scared of this perfume, I accidentally got a bit on my fingers and the headaches began. Can't.do.floral.perfumes.friends.

Something I do love about Atelier Cologne is whenever their products are in a Sephora Play box they always include a cute postcard which I immediately send ^_^
Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Nightcap Overnight Perfector

I was surprised how convenient this product seemed when I received it. I wondered, "How did I live without this?" Especially after a haircut and blowout this product sounds like a must-have!

Essentially you use this product before bed (wet or dry) apply root to tip and it keeps your hair looking great. It also works when your hair is washed or unwashed. Night Cap lasts through five washes too! What I think is most amazing is that you don't need to wrap your hair in a towel or anything Night cap soaks right in.

My hair routine consists of Purely Perfect or New Wash (from Hair Story) and Alba Botanica shampoo and conditioner when my hair gets too oily (I prefer So Smooth Gardenia). I usually straighten my hair if I use Purely Perfect, shampoo & conditioner, but I leave my hair with New Wash to be free. So I was curious what this product would do after I dried it and went to bed. I did think my hair looked better using Nightcap, but didn't notice overwhelming results. I think I'm going to save this product for the next time I get a haircut.
Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper

I feel like I keep getting this eyeliner over and over again whether it be from Sephora Play boxes or from Beauty Insider perks. Both scenarios are great because I don't have to go out and buy a new $10 drugstore eyeliner and can use this one for the next few months. I swear by these eyeliners, although they are pricey they are so worth it. My favorite high end eyeliner for sure. The blackest and inkiest eyeliner of them all.
Ole Henriksen Sheer Transformation

I couldn't decide whether I was annoyed that I was getting this cream again or happy? I got this cream in the September 2015 Sephora Play box, my first box, and the first subscription box. This cream worked Mother Theresa miracles for my skin. After I ran out I bought another 1 oz bottle for $10 (a holiday clearance set) but I'm not getting the miracles as expected. This may be because my skin tends to get over products if I consistently use them (happened with Glamglow Supercleanse too) and they don't work as well. However, I still use this cream all the time and although I don't get miracles anymore it still works as a "pick me up" for my boring, normal skin.
Sephora Collection Rouge Shine Lipstick in Love Spell

This is a "rosy" pink but it seemed more baby pink to me rather than rosy. This lipstick is super moisturizing without any lip balm (thank you Sephora)! I did like that in the Sephora Play book that it suggested using a translucent powder to your lips with a light dusting to keep the color in place. I never knew that Rouge Shine had shea butter and is rich in vitamins and minerals. I will not be repurchasing this color as its just too much of a Lindsay Lohan color vs. a Chanel color.

Overall, I did enjoy this box. It was kind of a bummer that I got two products I'm already super familiar with but I think I'd rather have that than two products I hated. The Clear brow gel was something I'd never pick up but adored. I still don't know how I've lived without Living Proof's Night Cap, it seems like a post haircut necessity.

On the other-hand, I can certainly live without Atelier Cologne Sud Magnolia and Love Spell lipstick from Sephora Collection. Way too floral scented, and too light for my skin unfortunately.

I hope you all enjoy a beautiful, cool, pumpkin spice filled, October. In case you're wondering my nails are Spoken from the Heart by OPI.

  4. What a great haul in such a cute pouch. I've seen so many people raving about this Sephora box and now I'm so much more tempted to try it. I was excited to hear about the LP Nightcap, but it seems like it was so so for you. I have yet to hear about a fabulous miracle hair cream that keeps your locks looking great.

  11. I had the same experience wit the Ole Henriksen moisturizer, too! I received the same sample size from Influenster and loved it so much that I went out and purchased the full size and I feel as though it's not giving me the same amazing results it initially did. Now that you've mentioned you've had the same experience, I wonder why? Anyway, all the products you've got here seem to be amazing! I never really considered brow gel before either, until I got my eyebrows done at Benefit yesterday for the first time and the girl who threaded my brows used it on me and I was pretty amazed at how well it held up and made my brows look, it does make a difference! Thanks so much for sharing, beauty, and I hope you have the most amazing week ahead!

    1. That really bums me out Jalisa, how disappointing! My skin tends to get accustomed to products and reject it, but I'm surprised this product couldn't work through those problems. Ooh sounds cool maybe I should try a Benefit Brow bar! Likewise, can't wait for Friday!

  16. Loved hearing your thoughts on this since we're box twins :) I've only been subscribed since March but I definitely agree that I've been getting my money's worth each month. As for shipping, I would say I live in the "heart of suburbia" (lol) and I usually don't get my box until like the 15th ish? I'm always jealous when I hear of people recieving them within the first week!

I've been so confused about that Living Proof stuff but now I'm excited to use it! Unfortunately I don't love the KVD liner :( It swatched so great on my hand but on my eyes it didn't look all that great. Either way, at least I know not to buy the full size version :D

OH NO! I can't believe you didn't like it! It's very dark though which I love, but I can understand if its not the write pigmentation though. I am confused by the Living Proof stuff too haha just waiting for my next haircut!

  19. I can understand your frustration from getting a repeated item but at least it's a good one that you will use. I had a good chuckle when I read you describing the Sephora lipstick shade as more Lindsay Lhan than Chanel, brilliant!
