The 13 Year Dress

July 29, 2021

You might remember the 3 year dress, but move over for the 13 year dress. When I was in 8th grade I remember seeing the Anna Sui S/S 2008 RTW collection on Vogue.com and it changed my life. It was so eclectic. So much about the collection spoke to me. The colored wigs, the retro style, you name it.

This look from the collection has always stuck with me. A lot of it is nostalgia, my love for the color pink being used in a unique way, and Sasha Pivovarova rocking this look like none other. Also, as a teenager lost in suburbia I remember seeing this dress in Seventeen Magazine and I promised my then punk rock self that someday I would have this dress. It would be mine. It would find its way to me.

Editorial from May 2008 Seventeen Magazine. Styled by the one and only Annebet Duvall.

One evening I was browsing Poshmark and I found this dress listed for $70. Immediately I sent an offer to the seller. I was so ecstatic when my offer for $50 was accepted. In 2008 this dress retailed for $462, and now based on Anna Sui's website where she sells some vintage pieces in a section called Anna's Vintage Closet this piece probably retails for around $300. Major score.

Alexa play Masterpiece because this dress is a Masterpiece. It is 100% silk and GORGEOUS. It makes me so happy and I'm so grateful I get to be its owner.

Silk dresses are my favorite thing to wear in the summer. KC is basically the temperature of hell so its nice to have natural fiber pieces to wear because they keep you cool. I wore this dress when it was 102 and was so surprised with how cool and comfortable I was.

I am not a big earring person, but this pair is so beautiful and was given to me by my Aunty Eileen. Love putting them on for a night out.

This dress is oddly versatile. Belt it. Wear neon colored socks and chunky heels. Or just wear a pair of secondhand espadrilles and turn your Gucci bag into a fanny pack.

I have been feeling more like Chanel these days and I'm really grateful for that. I am eating well, exercising five days a week, and starting to see some progress both physically and mentally. My friends have been so supportive of this journey that I've been on. They've met me where I am at with so much love and enthusiasm and with gluten-free/healthy alternatives + snacks.  I feel so loved and supported as my friends have switched to building healthier habits with me. I am coming to terms with the fact that this journey with my body/body image is a journey not a destination, and that's something I'm really proud of.

Another year in a pandemic. JMC turned 9 this month. The blog looks different lately, but I like the direction we're going in. I hope you do too. Thank you for being here.

  1. What a cute dress! I love the bright print and I can't believe how lucky you must have felt to have found it after all this time! I think those big earrings are such a nice accessory with it too :)
