April Sephora Play 2017 Review

June 9, 2017

I was pleased to see an Anne (with an E) of Green Gables like character when I opened my Sephora Play box a couple months ago. Although this bag was filled with essentials like primer, moisturizer, exfoliator, makeup remover, and eyeliner I was a bit frustrated with this Sephora Play bag.

Make Up Forever Aqua XL Eye Pencil in Black
I already received this eye pencil in the December '15 box. It dried out pretty badly but I can't remember whether that was my doing or not..I was slightly annoyed to get this eyeliner but upon usage it was creamy and lets me skimp on using all liquid on my eye lids which is helpful. This is one of my favorite pencil eyeliners, the formula is so good! Don't let it dry out!
I always need make up remover and I can always take this mini when I'm travelling. Supposedly one cotton ball removes a smoky eye look. I did a Modern Renaissance look and wow, one cotton ball really did take it all off. I was doubtful, but this stuff did it. I prefer this eye makeup remover over one like the The Estee Edit Dissolve the Drama 2 in 1 Makeup Remover + Cleanser (in my November '16 bag). I don't think I'd buy a full size of this product because I'm still gong through the Sephora Collection 2 in 1 waterproof eye makeup remover gel, but I would buy another travel size. This formulation is less oily than the Estee Edit Makeup Remover and is much stronger than the Makeup Remover Gel from Sephora Collection I have now.
Smashbox Photo Finish Primer
I'm not much of a primer girl but I know this one is iconic. This mini is worth almost $10 on eBay so at least Sephora Play is paying out. I did receive this primer in the July 2016 bag already. Extra primer is never a bad thing to have though, right?
Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Intesive Exfoliating Treament
This was an interesting product, interesting because its green and smells like Starbucks' matcha powder. This treatment is for all skin types and is an exfoliator that smooths and polishes the skin to reveal glowing skin. After a long day at school wearing no makeup I tried this treatment and my goodness it made my skin so radiant. It claims to be a 2 minute facial and I agree. Apparently it helps with crows feet, fine lines, and wrinkles! Although I was surprised to find no matcha in this product there was a lot of fruit enzymes like papaya, pineapple, pumpkin, and all the good stuff like natural softeners like Aloe and Honey. This is such a great product especially for those lazy days where you want a quick refresh.
Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hyaluronic Cloud Cream
I'm still on the fence about how I feel about this cream. Its so thin and watery. When applying it, it just doesn't really feel like a cream because of its runny consistency. I don't feel like this cream is very moisturizing but I don't feel like my skin ever feels dry with it on. Has anyone else tried this one?!
Marc Jacobs Daisy Fragrance
Gave this straight away to my girl Alyssa. No thanks floral perfume!

Overall I was displeased with the repetition from Sephora Play's April 2017 box. I really wish they would let us pick our own samples so we could avoid this overlap =/ I hate to leave such a negative post but Sephora Play can do better and be better (my May box was much better which I'll be reviewing soon)! Its almost been two years since I've received Sephora Play and I remember getting brands like Glamglow and Ole Henriksen when the box was in the trial stage. I really hope this box gets back to that standard, and we have less overlapping boxes! For the $10 a month price the samples still are significantly worth more than the cost of the box but still, I could be happier.

Any Sephora Play subscribers? What would you buy with $10?

  2. It's a shame about the repetition in this bag but I would still enjoy using some of the products like the Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Intesive Exfoliating Treament and the Smashbox primer. I wish this was available in the UK, I can't wait for the day Sephora makes its way over here! :) x

  8. From what I've read, it seems as though Sephora tends to add in the same products form previous boxes. I wonder if it's based off the amount of boxes they've sent and if the product(s) received enough exposure? Nonetheless, I guess it kind of worked out in that you were able to test out the eyeliner again and it proved to be great; I need to keep it in mind. I also want to try out that eye makeup remover, it seems to work incredibly well! Thanks so much for sharing, beauty, and I hope you're having a great start to your week so far!

  11. What a shame that you were disappointed with the Sephora Play this time round! The little drawstring bag is so cute though- and at least you got some goodies from it. The Smashbox primer is excellent and I've heard that the Kate Somerville ExfoliKate is amazing for your skin!

  14. Too bad that this was a repetitive box, but I'm glad to hear that May's was better. I like the idea of boxes like these, but I'm just not enough of a beauty junkie to really get my money's worth. I love reading your reviews though!

    1. May and June's were so much better fortunately! They do pay out. I used to be such a beauty junkie at Sephora but these bags have really helped me stop shopping at Sephora so much since the samples get me by for so long.
